The Chapel of the Mother of God, the “oldest” heritage property that exists in the city of Caniço, was vandalised last night. In the image, shared by the president of the Parish Council, Milton Teixeira, it is possible to see one of the facades of the chapel covered with graffiti.
In a statement the mayor condemned the “regrettable” act, recalling that this chapel was built in 1536, making it one of the oldest Marian temples in Madeira. Marian Chapels, also known as Mary Chapels are buildings dedicated to the Virgin Mary. They can be found across the globe, including Antartica.
The building is classified as a Property of Public Interest.
