“Madeirans are showing more and more interest in Madeira Embroidery.” This is the finding of Marisa Santos, a member of the board of directors of the Institute of Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts of Madeira (IVBAM).
“The findings and the interest shown in Madeiran Embroidery during World Embroidery Day, and last week show a “very positive” return to people’s passion for this type of work,” states Marisa Santos. The event finished yesterday, the 30th of July, with a Eucharist in honour of the House Embroiderers presided over by D. Nuno Brás, in the São Gonçalo Church.
Concluding, Marisa Santos added, “it was the first time the IVBAM associated itself with World Embroidery Day. We prepared for a week a set of activities that proves that Madeira Embroidery continues to arouse the curiosity of many people, Furthermore, more attention will be spent on teaching this art and we have always had initiatives dedicated to those who wanted to learn to embroider, but during this week we had numerous requests so we will reinforce our training schemes.”
Up until the 8th of August, it will be possible to see selected pieces of Madeiran Embroidery in several shop windows: Joalharia São Pedro, the Moda Madeira Showroom, the Giggles store, the Details store, and the Career Clinic.
