Increase In Motorcycle Accidents

At this time of year, the Public Security Police (PSP) carries out an awareness and inspection action at the roundabout next to the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory (LREC). Operation Stop is included in the “2 Wheels: Hold on to Life” Campaign, which started last Wednesday.

According to Edgar Castro, Commander of the Traffic Division, the main objective is to alert drivers, especially motorcyclists, to safe driving.

However, the PSP official has revealed that this year, PSP figures concerning motorcycle accidents have increased, although, the number of victims may be lower compared to 2023.

Edgar Castro reported that so far there have been 378 accidents in 2024, creating 340 victims on the roads of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The commander of the PSP Traffic Division further added that the victims equate to “28% of all road accidents,” a figure that he considers serious.  This concern is reflected in the 305 very serious injuries caused by motorcycle/scooter accidents. “In the total number of fatalities from road accidents, in 2023, 1/4 (3) were the result” of motorcycle accidents.

The campaign and this inspection had the participation of the services of the Regional Directorate of Roads, in awareness of the inspection carried out by the Traffic Police Station of the Regional command of the PSP.

This initiative is part of the National Inspection Plan (PNF) of 2024 and ends at midnight on the 16th of July.
