Restaurant owners located in the Old Town were surprised today with the removal, of tables, chairs, and parasols from the terraces by officers from the inspection service.
Two weeks ago the Funchal City Council (CMF) warned restauranteurs that it would proceed with the removal of the urban furniture from the terraces, which are unduly occupying the public area of the Old Town, in an operation started in Largo do Corpo Santo, between Travessa dos Escaleres and Forte de São Tiago.
It should be recalled that, as was made public by the CMF, the municipality’s teams went to the field to notify restaurant owners, informing them that they could not continue to occupy the public space as these constitute public space infractions, as they are using more space than their license permits.
Some businessmen contest the decision and feel aggrieved, as they believe that they are not unduly impeding pedestrian traffic.
