The Regional Strategy for monitoring and mitigating the impact of floating sargassum in the Region and the corresponding Action Plan were approved during the 4th meeting of the working group, created for this purpose by Government Council Resolution No. 194/2024, of April 22.
This multidisciplinary working group, which is coordinated by Deputy Superintendent Marco Lobato, Member of the Board of Directors of the SRPC, IP-RAM, took place on the 12th of July, at the headquarters of the Regional Civil Protection Service, IP – RAM, in Funchal.
The meeting was attended by the Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection, as well as the representatives of the Regional Secretaries responsible for the different areas of intervention, namely the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment, the Regional Secretariat for Equipment and Infrastructures, the Regional Secretariat for the Economy, Tourism and Culture and the Regional Secretary for Finance, as well as the effective members of the entities representing the working group Multidisciplinary.
During the meeting, the Regional Strategy outlined by the Working Group was presented, and, concomitantly, the corresponding Action Plan that will operationalise the areas of intervention within the scope of detection, monitoring, collection, transport, and final destination of sargassum that arrives in the region.
This document has been finalised and will be reviewed no later than six years after its entry into force. It may be revised before that period on the basis of lessons learned during its implementation and information from technical or scientific studies or reports, especially on the dynamics and nature of sargassum. This will be available to the public on the institutional website of the Regional Civil Protection Service, IP – RAM.
