Summer Opening Is Bigger and Better

Summer Opening returns on Friday the 12th of July at the Parque de Santa Catarina, for a tenth edition with big names and a budget exceeding 800 thousand euros.

The event, which takes place on the 12th, 13th, 19th, and 20th of July, was presented this Monday at the CMF’s Noble Hall and has on its poster artists and groups such as Sérgio Godinho, Da Weasel, Ivandro, Julinho KSD, Pedro Mafama and Van Zee.

With its first edition in 2013, this is one of the largest music festivals to take place in the Region.  The Summer Opening “has done a public service,” acknowledged Gonçalo Camacho, as in its eleven-year history it has brought more than 150 performances and more than 50 premieres to the region.  This year, more than 35 artists will perform at the Parque de Santa Catarina during the four-day festival, many of them Madeirans, including Van Zee, who will close the main stage on the last day.

As part of a protocol between the Funchal City Council and the company Sons de Pérola, the organiser, the municipality financially supports the Summer Opening with a sum of 14 thousand euros, to which is added the exemption of inherent municipal fees in accordance with the General Regulation of Fees, other revenues and municipal licenses, This brings the support to around 18,500 euros.

The protocol was signed today, and on the occasion, the president of the CMF, Cristina Pedra, highlighted the greatness and “excellence” of this event, as well as the “set of initiatives, which are of public interest” and which are associated with the festival.

Specifically, the mayor recalled the social aspect, resulting from a “partnership with the Regional Secretariat for Health Civil Protection, which through UCAD will carry out several actions to raise awareness of risk behaviors”, including “family planning” and “activities for the prevention and reduction of drug consumption”, also pointing out that the municipality has made this issue – the no to drugs – one of its bets.

In addition, the mayor pointed out the “environmental aspect”, namely the non-use of plastic cups.

It should be noted that the Summer Opening program is spread over two stages, the main one, with 13 performances, and the Electronic Bustle, with 12.

On these four days, the doors of the venue open at 5:00 pm and the event closes at 1:00 am. Tickets can be purchased here.
