Exercise ‘Procivex’ has proven that if Madeira was hit by a tsunami it would have devastating consequences in Funchal, Santa Cruz, Machico, and Porto Santo, concludes the Regional Civil Protection.
According to the President of the Regional Civil Protection, the probability of an earthquake with the magnitude the exercise was based on is low, but if it happened, the Region would not be self-sufficient, that is, it would always have to resort to external aid.
The Porto Santo Health Centre, for example, would be inoperable because of the island’s topography, and therefore a field hospital would have to be set up on the mainland.
