The parish of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos was surprised by a sudden police operation carrying out several searches, targeting at least two residences on Monday morning.
As far as local newspaper, JM, was able to ascertain, the combat drug trafficking operation brought together several elements of the Judiciary Police (PJ) and the Public Security Police (PSP), in addition to the National Republican Guard (GNR) sniffer dogs.
At least one individual was reportedly arrested as a result of the raid.
The operation was welcomed by the local population, where some residents had already expressed concerns related to security and, in particular, drug trafficking and consumption. Furthermore, the President of the Parish Council of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Gabriel Pereira, applauded the police operation, although he stressed he was unaware of the drug raid.
“It’s a good sign for the population, people see that the authorities are working,” said Gabriel Pereira. “This is, unfortunately, a phenomenon with examples throughout the Region. The Estreito de Câmara de Lobos is not the only one, nor is it the exception. That’s why these operations are important.”
The mayor stressed that these problems continue to exist and deserve attention, although the phenomenon has been more serious in the past.
