Cars Abandoned Due to Ice

The Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters (BVM) were mobilized, this morning, to Pico do Areeiro to assist about two dozen drivers who were stranded as the formation of ice had created hazardous driving conditions in the mountainous region.

According to local media outlet, JM, the corporation, in a joint action with the Forest Police, was guiding drivers to safety, especially as some of the motorists had found themselves in precarious conditions due to ice on the road.

Originally 20 cars and drivers were thought to be affected, but by the time the BVM arrived, some had managed to drive to negotiate the narrow icy roads.

The Public Security Police (PSP) were also called to the scene.
