Madeira Under Orange Alert

Ten districts on the mainland, the north coast of Madeira and Porto Santo will be under an orange warning on Thursday and Friday due to strong sea agitation, the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) said today.

On the mainland, the districts of Faro, Porto, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga will be under a yellow warning between 09:00 and 18:00 on Thursday, then orange between 18:00 on Thursday and 06:00 on Friday.

The north coast of the island of Madeira and Porto Santo will be under a yellow warning between 03:00 and 09:00 on Thursday, then orange between 09:00 on Thursday and 00:00 on Friday.

Porto Santo and the North Coast of Madeira will be under a yellow warning between 00:00 and 06:00 on Friday.

The IPMA forecasts for the mainland, north coast of Madeira, and Porto Santo for Thursday and Friday west/southwest waves up to 5 to 6 metres in height which may reach a maximum of 11 metres.

The orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation and the yellow warning is when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
