The landslide that occurred last night next to Clube Naval do Funchal, caused minimal damage although a car was buried under the debris. According to Apartmentos do Mar condominium administrator, Inês Pereira, the rockfall was caused by the rupture of a sewer pipe located inside the wall.
“The walls that support the pool and solarium are completely intact, without a single crack,” she said. Furthermore, weaknesses in the wall had already been detected and the risk of subsidence assessed. Approximately 20 days ago the necessary work on the wall had been approved, and during Tuesday morning council workers had already started clearing the area. The occurrence happened late that evening at 22:50.
