The Regional Government, through the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development, held a workshop at the Farrobo Experimentation Centre, Porto Santo, where the production and marketing of Dragon Fruit in Organic Production Mode was addressed. The event was attended by technicians from the Regional Directorate and 20 farmers who have expressed an interest in farming this emerging crop.
The participants were told that the island of Porto Santo has unique conditions for the production of dragon fruit and that the implementation of this crop would help to diversify the offer of regional products, especially on the occasions when the island receives more visitors, which consequently would allow farmers to obtain sustainable profits due to the high demand.
During the workshop, which was attended by the Director of Agronomic Development Services, Rui Nunes, several technical aspects related to this crop were also addressed, such as its origin, environmental conditions, and the propagation of this fruit.
