Family Rehomed Due to Landslide

A family of three were rehoused today, as a precaution, due to a landslide.  The incident occurred in the parish of Curral das Freiras.

“The landslide did not cause damage to the house, nor are there any injuries to record,” the Mayor of Câmara de Lobos, Leonel Silva, told Lusa news agency, explaining that the family, made up of three adults, moved in with relatives as a precaution.

According to the mayor, the landslide, which occurred during the afternoon, blocked the road at the Fajã dos Cardos site blocking local water courses.

The operation to clean and clear the road was completed by 18:30 by members of the Câmara de Lobos Volunteer Firefighters, and employees of a construction company located in the municipality, who provided mechanised help.

The south coast of the island of Madeira and the mountainous regions were today under an orange warning, the second most serious on a scale of three, for heavy rain between 06:00 and 18:00, with a yellow warning now in force until 21:00.

The bad weather caused several landslides, floods, and falling tree branches in several localities, but there are no reports of injuries or substantial material damage.

Madeira International Airport also experienced major constraints during the day, and according to information available on the website of ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, nine flights, operated by several companies and coming from several European cities, were forced to divert to other airports or turn back, and at least another 12 flights were cancelled (arrivals and departures).
