A Divers Paradise

Three underwater archaeological routes – Bom Rei, Prompt, and SS Newton – are now available to lovers of archaeological and creative diving in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The public exhibition of these routes, created within the scope of the Margullar2 project, was inaugurated this Tuesday morning.

ACIF – Madeira Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as promoter of the initiative, in partnership with the Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Culture, framed the project, funded by the Interreg MAC 2014-2020 Programme.

The presentation of the work, which resulted in the three routes, was given by Alexandre Brazão, director of CEAM – Centre for the Study of Modern and Contemporary Archaeology, while Natércia Xavier, Regional Director of Culture, closed the session.

This initiative is part of the MARGULLAR 2 project – ‘Network of Underwater Archaeological Parks of the MAC Space,’  aims to “contribute to the strengthening of the conservation, protection, promotion and development of natural resources and cultural heritage associated with the underwater archaeological heritage of the Macaronesia region, through the creation of a new tourism initiative.”

The project is based on three pillars: Reactivation of Maritime Archaeology centres for the enhancement of the Underwater Historical Heritage; Protection and preservation of submerged cultural heritage; and Assessment of the Underwater Historical Heritage of Macaronesia.
