Map Collection Presentation

The President of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira presided today at the presentation of four roadmap maps of “Modern and modernist architecture, among others – Madeira and Porto Santo.” This is an initiative of GENUS – Association for the Defence of the Heritage of Madeira, which had the support of the Madeiran Parliament and the Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Culture.

The publications identify around 220 buildings located in Madeira and Porto Santo by approximately 40 modernist architects and engineers. Each map contains QR codes that direct the user to online maps where they can consult other information such as date, municipality, and general observations.

José Manuel Rodrigues congratulated the work done by GENUS technicians and volunteers.

“It is with great satisfaction, and for various reasons, that the Parliament of Madeira sponsored these itineraries about our architecture and our heritage. First of all, because we must conserve, value, and disseminate Madeiran culture and identity, of which architecture and historical heritage are one of its most visible facets,” he stressed.

The President of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira stressed “that building heritage is one of the landmarks and one of the factors that distinguish us as a people,” constituting “one of the foundations of our Autonomy.”

He also pointed out that “heritage, its different architectures, and styles help to tell our 600-year history, from the platform of Portuguese expansion, through the cycles of sugar, wine, tourism and the 21st century.”

“They also tell how cultures, peoples, and civilizations crossed here and how we are heirs of this past and that we must preserve them for new generations.”

José Manuel Rodrigues reaffirmed the will of the Madeiran Parliament to “continue to support this work of inventory, recovery, and dissemination of our rich heritage, in particular the most recent, which is still to be studied, classified and made known. Our identity, our memory are our best future.”

The collection will allow residents and national and foreign tourists to disseminate relevant information from a social, cultural, and tourist point of view, valuing the territories where the georeferenced buildings are located, as well as the respective local economies. The presentation included a critical reading by University Professor Ana Salgueiro and the intervention of the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus.

The four publications were launched in the space of the Artistic Residency of Câmara de Lobos Islet. The building chosen for the launch of the maps was originally designed to receive the function of a kindergarten, is designed by the architects Aleixo and José Terra da Motta and is incorporated into the collection of maps.
