Low Levels of Health Literacy

“Our population’s health literacy levels are low,” stated Rubina Leal at a seminar on ‘Health Literacy: Saves Lives!’ An initiative of the Madeira delegation of the Portuguese Foundation for the Community Against AIDS.

At the event, which took place at the Electricity Museum, Casa da Luz, the representative in the Region of the Portuguese Foundation ‘The Community Against AIDS,’ said she believes that the effects of health promotion and disease prevention should be worked on. Prevention is a weapon within reach. But it’s not enough. It is important to inform and educate people so that they willingly change their behaviours.

She also pointed out that stigma persists in our community. What the Madeira delegation is committed to is continuing to seek is more training and preventative measures.
