Fires: Regional Government Support Measures

The CDS Parliamentary Group, together with local Mayors, visited the municipality of Calheta, more precisely some of the parishes most affected by last week’s fires.

On the occasion, Lopes da Fonseca stressed that the Regional Government will announce support measures.

“The Regional Government will announce support measures and there are matters in which the Government will not give up supporting, especially the populations in the rehabilitation of their homes, farm buildings, compensating farmers for the loss of livestock and destruction of land. Furthermore, in the future, the Regional Government will be concerned with how the air resources should act. The helicopter we have is limited because it can only operate during the day, and we really need an air that can also operate during the night.”

The parliamentary leader, on the occasion, also praised the selfless and resilient way in which both the population and in particular the professionals acted during the disaster. “There were hundreds of professionals who were here day and night for a few days and who deserve our praise and thanks.”

Finally, Lopes da Fonseca launched a challenge to the Government of the Republic. “We know that the costs of air transport are borne exclusively by the Region. When will the Government of the Republic assume its responsibility towards the air environment in relation to the Autonomous Region of Madeira?” Moreover, he called on the Government of the Republic, once and for all, to provide the Autonomous Region of Madeira with an air asset that can work in all conditions.”
