Government Aid to Farmers

Last updated on 16th October 2023

Farmers in Câmara de Lobos who suffered damage to their farms, caused by the fires that consumed a vast area of land across two municipalities, will be compensated for their losses.

“The Regional Government had already decided to support the farmers of Calheta and Porto Moniz, but in view of the events of the last few hours, it decided to extend the support to the farmers of Câmara de Lobos,” announced the Regional Secretary for Agriculture, Humberto Vasconcelos.

Emergency assistance to farmers covers the restoration of agricultural land and the restoration of effective agricultural production under sub-measure 5.2. of PRODERAM 2020, which defines non-repayable support in situations of natural disasters, adverse weather phenomena, and catastrophic events, as was the case, with a subsidy rate of 100% on the eligible expenditure.

Non-repayable compensation aims to support the restoration or restoration of production conditions and infrastructures of an individual or collective nature, namely in vegetable and fruit crops, in the acquisition of equipment (such as irrigation systems, tillers, and sprayers), in the recovery of agricultural constructions (such as water reservoirs for irrigation, earth support walls, warehouses, and greenhouses) and compensation to beekeepers who have lost hives and livestock producers who have lost animals.

It should be noted that the process will be “very simple” and that the applications will be made through a declaration of losses, which must be delivered to the usual places, more precisely where the applications for the Single Request are made, as well as to the Casas do Povo do Porto Moniz and Fajã da Ovelha and the Santa Horticultural Supply Centre.
