Regions Life Expectancy Calculations

The National Institute of Statistics released today the mortality tables by NUTS2 region, for the three-year period 2020-2022. It should be noted that, for the first time, they are part of the resident population estimates based on the definitive results of the 2021 Census, so the results are not comparable with those of previous trienniums.

In the 2020-2022 triennium, life expectancy at birth for the population residing in the Region was estimated at 78.77 years: 75.05 years for men and 81.63 years for women, indicating that women can expect to live almost 7 years longer than men, according to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM).

“For the national whole, life expectancy at birth was estimated at 80.96 years (2.19 years more compared to that estimated for the Region). The results also indicate that, in the country, women can expect to live 83.52 years and men 78.05 years. In the North there is the greatest longevity (81.53 years), contrasting with the Autonomous Region of the Azores whose life expectancy at birth is the lowest in the country (78.04 years)”, he indicates.

In the Region, life expectancy at 65 years of age reached 2020.2022 years in the 17-95 triennium. Men aged 65 can expect to live on average 15.38 more years and women another 19.71 years, with the difference in these ages equal to 4.33 years.

Life expectancy at 65 years in Portugal reached 19.61 years for the total population (1.66 years more than in the RAM): 17.76 years for men and 20.98 years for women. It is also in the North that there is the greatest longevity at 65 years (19.88 years) and in the Autonomous Region of the Azores the lowest (17.65 years).

From the survival function of the complete mortality table for the Region, by sex, for the 2020-2022 triennium, it appears that women survive in greater numbers at higher ages, compared to men. For example, it is estimated that 81.1% of male live births and 91.4% of female live births survive to the age of 65 years if subjected throughout their lives to the specific probabilities of death by ages observed in the period 2020-2022.
