During one of their election campaigns, the Portuguese Communist Party (PTP) claimed that Madeira is split into two, and that those living in the mountainous regions were invisible to the island’s leading elite.
“We have two Madeira’s: that of tourists and those who have money to buy the luxury apartments of Mr. Avelino and Mr. Custódio, while the poor have been pushed to the outskirts of the city, who live without proper facilities, in inhospitable and dangerous areas without any kind of accessibility.”
In this regard, the party says that the mayors and rulers of the PSD “never worried about the mountain areas, abandoned them and never thought to ensure that the whole population has adequate housing, facilities including public and sporting facilities, and is accessible to all.”
