The Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) firmly believes that Porto Santo’s Airport should be used as a contingency airport and that a fast connection between the two islands is needed.
José Manuel Coelho held a campaign this afternoon defending the party’s belief that Porto Santo airport has two main functions – one to serve the island of Porto Santo and the second to be a backup to Madeira’s International Airport during times of interoperability due to high winds/storms.
Earlier in June this year, Pedro Ângelo, board manager of Air Navigation Portugal (NAV), said that the construction of a new tower at Madeira Airport is being considered.
Asked if Porto Santo Airport would have new radars, he said that “they are thinking of installing a new auxiliary equipment,” adding that the equipment is nearing its end life and, therefore, has to be replaced next year.
“We will do everything to help Madeira’s airport infrastructure to be endowed with better operating conditions; it is in our best interest. We always want more aircraft. It’s our greatest source of revenue,” he said.
Installing new radars at the Madeira International Airport will cost in the region of 2.8 million euros. NAV and the Regional government are considering the construction of a new tower which will cost in the region of four million euros.
