Filming will begin next month for the film ‘The Wizard of the North,’ set to premiere on Netflix late summer 2024.
The project, directed by Martinho da Silva Andrade, aims to highlight the north coast of Madeira, promoting traditions such as wheat picking, harvesting, and sugar cane. Filming will take place at Arco de São Jorge, Ponta Delgada, Boaventura, and Porto da Cruz.
For the film’s recording, Marcos Gonçalves, great-grandson of Manuel Gonçalves de Freitas, also known as the ‘Wizard of the North,’ will arrive in Madeira from São Paulo, Brazil.
The actor, who will play his great-grandfather on his deathbed and in the loss of his murdered son, will play opposite Mary Abreu, a Madeiran actress, in the house where the Madeiran troubadour lived and died. Manuel Gonçalves de Freitas is considered “one of the greatest poets of the region.”
Filming is expected to last until June 2024, with the participation of Madeiran and national actors.
