Depression Oscar Expected To Hit Madeira Tomorrow

The Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) has placed the Madeiran archipelago under a ‘red’ weather warning from 3 pm tomorrow (5th June) afternoon due to Depression Oscar. This depression will greatly influence weather conditions from Monday afternoon until Tuesday.  The weather is expected to lead to landslides, flash floods, and flooding.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, “Oscar” is a “complex depression that should have its main core” passing through Madeira carrying a “tropical air mass with an exceptionally high water vapor content, thus resulting in the worsening of the weather in the Canary Islands and Madeira.”

In the same statement, the IPMA points out that the forecast is that Oscar will affect the islands from tomorrow afternoon until mid-afternoon on Tuesday, with heavy and persistent precipitation (with accumulations that may be greater than 100 mm), sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds from the southern quadrant (with gusts up to 75 km / h.  Winds are expected to reach 95 km/h in the highlands), with the most significant impact on the southern slopes and highlands of the island of Madeira.”

Waves on the south coast are expected to reach 3 metres in height.

Therefore, the red warning is for rain and a second warning, yellow has been raised for strong winds.

Please note that these warnings are subject to change until the weather front hits the islands.
