A body was found today in the Faial coastal area, located on the north coast of Madeira. The authorities were promptly called after an alert was given at 12:47, and a SANAS Madeira team, including a lifeguard, carried out the retrieval of the corpse which was lying in a difficult to access area in Foz da Ribeira do Faial.
Everything indicates that it is a man’s body, but only an autopsy and subsequent identification will prove whether or not it is the body of the soldier who disappeared a week ago from a beach in São Jorge.
The operation is being coordinated by the Commander of the Maritime Police and Captain of the Port of Funchal.
The rescue operation began mid-afternoon, and a coroner and the Maritime Police were called to the area, with the area being closely monitored by the authorities. Once the body was retrieved, it was immediately transported to the Legal and Forensic Medicine Department of the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital where an autopsy will be performed.
