2 Million Stays Recorded in First Quarter

 
 
 

According to the data revealed today by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), between January and March 2023, overnight stays in the total tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), registered an increase of 52.8% compared to the same period of the previous year, approaching 2.3 million for the first time.

Already the estimates, referring to March 2023, reveal that 88.8% of tourist accommodation establishments in RAM registered a significant movement of guests this month. After analysing each segment, the hotel industry presented the highest percentage of passenger movement (89.9%), followed by tourism in rural areas, with 89.2%, and local accommodation, with 88.8%.

In the month of March 2023, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodations exceeded 855.8 thousand, translating an increase of 32.7% compared to the same month (644.8 thousand overnight stays in March 2022).

Excluding local accommodation with less than 10 beds, overnight stays in tourist accommodation recorded an increase of 27.9% compared to March 2022, slightly higher than nationally (+26.7%). Total income and room income, in March 2023, showed year-on-year growth of 42.3% and 51.9%, respectively, settling, in the same order, at 47.4 and 33.8 million euros. In the country, in the month in question, total and room income recorded positive year-on-year changes of 45.1% and 49.0%, in the same order.

The hotel industry concentrated 74.6% of overnight stays (638.8 thousand) in March 2023, growing 25.8% year-on-year, while local accommodation (22.8% of the total) grew 60.3% and tourism in rural areas (2.5% of the total), 43.9%.

Overnight stays in the main markets showed a strong French market registering the highest growth, of 42.9%, followed by the German and British markets, with increases of 31.9% and 10.3%. In the domestic market, overnight stays also registered an increase compared to March 2022 of +46.9%.

Comparing the reference period with March 2019 (pre-pandemic period), the activity in tourist accommodation showed a growth of 30.9% in overnight stays, with the market of residents abroad registering an increase of 20.0%. Considering the main markets of this segment, there were positive variations in the British (+12.6%), French and German markets (both with +10.6%). The domestic market maintained the growth trend, which has been observed in recent months (+132.9%).

In cumulative terms (from January to March 2023), the main issuing markets also showed year-on-year growth in this variable, with the French market showing the most significant increase, of 68.5%, followed by the market of residents in Portugal, Germany, and the United Kingdom, with year-on-year increases of 66.3%, 53.6%, and 36.6%, respectively.

In the month of March 2023, the value of the average stay in the tourist accommodation as a whole registered a slight decrease compared to the same month of the previous year (4.78 nights), settling at 4.46 nights.

The bed occupancy rate of tourist accommodation in the month in question was 63.2%, 9.3 percentage points (p.p.) above that observed in the same month (53.9%). In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 73.5% (62.3% in March 2022).

In the month of March 2023, RevPAR (room income per available room) was around 64.28 euros in the tourist accommodation as a whole (excluding local accommodation below 10 beds), +43.1% compared to the same month of the previous year. Compared to the value of March 2019 (42.88 euros), there was also an increase of 49.9%. If the analysis is restricted to the hotel industry, this indicator showed a year-on-year increase of 44.1%, with its value standing at 69.12 euros (+49.6% compared to March 2019). From January to March 2023, a RevPAR of 56.27 euros was calculated in the tourist accommodation as a whole (+59.5% compared to the same period last year) and 60.24 euros in the hotel sector (+60.8%). In turn, the profit per room used (ADR) in tourist accommodation went from € 72.15 in March 2022 to € 87.44 in March 2023 (+21.2% year-on-year), with the hotel industry registering an ADR of 89.97 euros (+21.5% compared to the same month last year).
