According to the data revealed today by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), between January and March 2023, overnight stays in the total tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), registered an increase of 52.8% compared to the same period of the previous year, approaching 2.3 million for the first time.
The Unitary Democratic Coalition (CDU:- a left/far left wing coalition between the Portuguese Communist Party and the Ecologist Party), through its regional coordinator Edgar Silva, said today that 'the so-called tourism recovery in Madeira and Porto Santo is based on the exploitation of its workers.'
According to data from the 'Idealista' portal, at the end of October there were 166 hotels for sale in Portugal, 4% more than in March (160), when the state of national emergency was declared. As predicted the number of hotels now for sale in Madeira, has increased by 100%: five establishments in March and ten in October.
