A woman’s body was found this afternoon under the Ribeira de João Gomes bridge, Funchal.
The incident occurred between the Luso-Brazilian and the Botanical Garden tunnels, and according to witness statements, the woman stopped her car and committed suicide by jumping off the bridge.
Rescue teams were immediately sent to the scene but soon returned base as there was nothing they could do.
Earlier this evening, the body was still in situ, as police cordoned off the area, waiting for a health authority representative to release the body. Once released the corpse will then be transported to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, Legal Medicine Office.
