According to local newspaper, JM, a body found floating in the water by the pier in Câmara de Lobos was that of a foreign citizen. Despite the efforts of ISN divers during the rescue mission the tourist eventually died.
The unidentified victim was initially rescued by ISN divers, who attended with a lifeguard from the National Maritime Authority. However, due to the sea turmoil, it was impossible to dock at the pier, where firefighters and an EMIR medical team were waiting.
The solution was to continue with the resuscitation on board the lifeboat and transport the man to Funchal. It was here that an EMIR medical team confirmed that the man had died en-route.
