Madeira Military in Joint NATO Exercise

The Military Zone of Madeira (ZZM) participated in the multinational exercise ‘STRONG IMPACT 2023’, with NATO Forces, the European Union, and the Portuguese Air Force, which took place at the Santa Margarida Military Camp.

“The STRONG IMPACT exercise was designed to test the planning, synchronisation, and conduct of military operations of a joint (several branches) and combined (several countries) nature, evidencing readiness and interoperability with NATO and European Union Forces, within the scope of high-intensity combat missions,” explains a note from ZMM. In addition to the Artillery Units of the Operational Component of the Portuguese Army Forces System, the exercise was attended by a Field Artillery Group of the Spanish Army, Advanced Observation Teams of the French Army, and, for the first time, Romanian Army military personnel who acted as observers.

Regiment No. 3 of the Madeira Military Zone, totaling 40 military personnel, took part in medium and heavy mortars and anti-aircraft artillery manoeuvers.

Simultaneously, the Lancers Regiment No. 2, ZMM participated in the ARMIGNON exercise with 8 military personnel from the Army Police specialty, with the objectives of maintaining the operational capabilities, both individually and collectively of the Army Police Group, consolidating and updating the Tactical Techniques and Army police Procedures.

These activities are part of the Army’s effort to increase operational training opportunities with other units, allowing for greater synergies and experience between the various regiments, resulting in an improvement in readiness, cohesion, and operational integration.
