Wild Tourism Affecting Madeira

In recent years, we have seen a change in the type of tourists travelling to Madeira.

Once seen as a senior citizen destination, Madeira has changed. Today, a large cross-section of tourists visit the island including young and old, families, adventurers, and moneyed and budget conscious tourists.

Amid so much diversity, a new type of tourist is also emerging, which tour guides are already concerned about, as more and more visitors sleep in rental cars to save on accommodation.

These visitors stay overnight near tourist areas and car parks and use public toilets for personal hygiene needs, as industry professionals warn of a new “wild tourism, which has no rules or supervision.”
