Successive cancellations and flight delays at Madeira Airport exhausted the patience of many passengers, many of whom had been waiting for hours for their return flight home.
The problem was caused by a dust cloud that encompassed the whole island, which severely hampered the operational conditions o the airport. Unfortunately, the delays led to more and more passengers being contained in a small area. Reporters noted that passengers were left in wheelchairs, and many elderly people and nursing mothers were left to fend for themselves as departure times lengthened throughout the day.
With cramped conditions and limited facilities, many passengers became frustrated at the lack of organisation.
