Butchered Trees Anger Raimundo Quintal

Environmentalist Raimundo Quintal, who was once a Funhal City councillor, is seething and demanding that the Regional Government informs and justifies what technical foundation they have on their barbaric actions on the ‘Casuarinas’ trees in the port area of the city. Casuarinas are native to Australia and Southeast Asia. These trees, which were planted along the road between the Funchal Port roundabout and Estrada da Liberdade have been butchered until they are nothing more than scarred trunks.

He went on to say that:

“Law No. 59/2021, of August 18, the Legal Regime of Management of the Tree Urbano. No Article 24, more specifically in point (d), it is written that it is forbidden to “damage, or mutilate any tree-sized tree or shrub, namely to prune head carving or scrolling,” says Raimundo Quintal, who accuses the Madeiran Executive of “ignoring the law and disregarding the right to information of the tax paying public!”

Interestingly enough, the comments section showed readers’ dissatisfaction with tree management around the city.
