Funchal Bus company, Horarios do Funchal (HF), has confirmed that three million additional passengers used their services in 2022 compared to 2021.
The President of HF believes that this increase in public transport use is primarily down the price of petrol, forcing people to abandon their cars and use local buses instead. The company closed 2021 with a total of 12.1 million passengers, while 2022 figures show that 15 million people used HF buses.
He went on to say that:
“This may be an indication that the increase in fuel prices puts tremendous pressure on people and with the price of a monthly ticket being 30 euros our buses are cost effective and provide a regular service, and with it, comes a change of behaviour in the use of public transport.”
Concluding, the President confirmed that the number of tourists using HF buses is slowly returning to pre-pandemic figures.
