After the success of the Christmas and New Year 2021/22 campaigns, which reached up to 42 million contacts/views, the Regional Government of Madeira is once again pairing up with this year’s two Road Safety awareness initiatives: “The best gift is to be present,” and the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) campaign.
The campaign runs from the 19th of December until the 2nd of January, with information being presented via different mediums including press, television, radios, social networks (Facebook and Instagram), as well as through electronic panels located on the Via Rápida and Via Expresso, appealing to everyone to drive safely this Christmas and New Year.
During the holiday season, in which the number of trips throughout the country, particularly in the continental territory increase there are factors that can trigger the increase in the number of risky behaviours while driving which can lead to accidents.
In Portugal, and despite the good results obtained over the last two decades, on average approximately 600 people die on Portuguese roads every year.
Road Accidents are a worldwide tragedy: every year 1.35 million people die worldwide. That’s 3,700 people a day, 1 person every 24 seconds.
In the first ten months of this year, Via Litoral retrieved 2,513 vehicles from the expressway, resulting from breakdowns, accidents, and even lack of fuel. 770 objects were also collected from the road. In the last four years, the concessionaire has spent another one million euros on reparations caused by road collisions relating to more than 10,000 occurrences.
