The Mayor of Funchal visited and donated blood at the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital Blood Bank this weekend.
The initiative organised by the Parish Political Commission of Santo António, aims, according to Pedro Calado, to sensitise the population to the importance of giving blood.
After giving blood he said:
“In a small symbolic action, we gathered a group of volunteers who wanted to create an initiative that highlights the importance of giving blood, ensures that keeps our blood reserves are kept at an optimum level, and provides information about the Blood Donor Association service.
At this moment Madeira has sufficient reserves, and we have even been able to donate blood units to health units outside the region. This symbiotic process is essential, as we never know when we will need help in maintaining our blood stock.”
Concluding, he asked all those who are healthy to consider giving blood. It is a simple process that takes approximately thirty minutes, and by giving blood you are potentially saving another person’s life
The Blood and Transfusion Medicine Service is open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 13:00 and Saturdays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.
