We Need a Cohesive Strategy on Abandoned Animals

The discussion around the first item on the agenda in the plenary of the Madeiran parliament ended with a proposal for a regional legislative decree to be passed, to create a regional stray animal sterilisation campaign in 2023.

Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) deputy, Ricardo Lume, explained that with this proposal, they do not intend to remove powers from the Regional Government or local authorities, but that the problem with stray animals is global. Thus, a regional-scale campaign could reverse the increase in stray animals.

Concluding, he said that although he recognises the work of the municipalities in this area, he regrets that eleven isolated municipal strategies are not going to solve the problem.
