Pico dos Barcelos Fruit Festival

The first experimental fruit festival, ‘Festival Frutícola,’ will take place from 17:00 on Saturday the 27th of August at Pico dos Barcelos, Santo António.

The event, organised by Casa do Povo de Santo António, aims to highlight the importance of fruits, especially stoned fruits such as loquats, plums, peaches etc.) .

This one-day edition will feature a debate ‘fruitful conversations’ with speakers Joaquim Leça and Pedro Lima and moderator/commentator Manuel Neto.

There will also be a demonstration showing that fruit is can be used in many different ways, including being eaten fresh, processed and as well as being used as part of other food mixes, this will be demonstrated by executive chef Nazário Serrão.

In addition to food and music, there will be cultural entertainment by the Folkloric Group of the Centro Cultural de Santo António, Fados – Associação de Fado da Madeira and the singer Miro Freitas.

As expected, there will also be a designated food area, and stalls selling fruits and plants.

There will be a free transport service limited to those living in the parish of Santo António, and places can be booked by calling 935 646 729.

This initiative has the support of the Regional Government of Madeira – Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Rural Development and the Santo António Parish Council.
