One hundred and fifty people participated in a walk promoted by the Association of Blood Donors of the Region, between the Casino and Praça do Município on Friday afternoon.
Funchal Mayor, Pedro Calado, who met the group, launched an appeal asking existing blood donors, and those interested in donating blood to come forward. This was seconded by the chairman of the board of the Association of Blood Donors of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, José Marques, who not only praised the initiative, but asked for more people to support the cause.
As part of the initiative, leaflets were handed out giving the blood donor appointment telephone number – 291 705 752. The leaflet went on to say “The person who ignores you today, may be the same person who will need your blood to survive tomorrow, remember that the world goes around many times.”
Healthy adults aged 18 and over, weighing 50 kg or more, and who lead a healthy lifestyle are encouraged to become new donors.
