Illegal Gill Net Found in Garajau Natural Reserve

As part of a surveillance and inspection mission at the Garajau Partial Natural Reserve last week, a team from the Nature Watchers Corps retrieved from the water a 30 metre gill net.(Large net which is suspended in the water from one point to another.  Fish can only get their heads through the mesh, and as they try and retreat their gills catch in the netting, making it impossible for them to escape).

The Garajau Partial Natural Reserve is located east of Funchal, and covers approximately six miles from Ponta do Lazareto, to the west, and Ponta da Oliveira, to the east. The protected area extends between the high tide line and the bathymetric 50 metres to the south (600 metres from the coast).
