Cumbre Vieja – La Palma

The volcanic eruption on the Island of La Palma (not that far away from Madeira) may be over –  knock on wood.

There has not been any new eruption since Tuesday (Dec 14). The gas output has stopped as well; the whole thing may be plugged for good, or not. The calm allowed scientists to actually approach the crater to take gas measurements and film the craters from close.

It started in September and was a heavy burden on the population. Many lost their homes and businesses. In some places, a few forlorn houses are encircled by thick black lava streams, without any way to get there.
