This viewpoint is situated above picturesque Curral das Freiras, a parish which has not seen much investment in the past but is going to catch up now.
Apart from a tunnel from the valley toward the north coast of the island, a cable car is also in planning. Land expropriations are under way which will cost the Government more than 3 Mio euros, to set up the base and top station and place the pylons into the valley from above. Cable cars are apparently a good business, and of course, they are attractive to tourists. The population, however, is not only comprised of well-wishers for the project. A Public Petition as been started to collect signatures to stop the project. The area is part of several protection plans and the opposition wants to keep it from being dotted with cable car pylons. There will be a demonstration against the project on Dec 20 at Quinta Vigia in Funchal.
