The Regional Government is to acquire and renovate the Fortim do Faial, Santana.
The news, which was announced this afternoon by Rogério Gouveia, the new Regional Secretary for Finance, stated that an agreement has been made on the acquisition, but he refused to say how much money the Regional Government was preparing to invest in the project. All that he did say, was that an agreement has been made with the ‘private sector.’
Furthermore, Rogério Gouveia recognises the importance of the island’s cultural heritage, and once the repair work has been completed the site, he believes, will serve as a valuable historical monument for both residents and visitors to the island.
The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, was also at the site today, recalling that an exhibition of old photographs held in Faial could be used to create a greater tourist experience, provided that the owners of the images were prepared to be part of the future project.
