The Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection, Pedro Ramos has contacted the Portuguese Minister of Health, Marta Temido, offering her the use of ten intensive care unit beds in the Covid-19 multipurpose unit at the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, for mainland Covid patients. An offer which was ‘immediately’ accepted by the Minister of Health.
Pedro Ramos’s offer of help was made due to several reasons, most notably, Portugal’s plunge into a fourth pandemic wave , the increased number of admissions due to the Delta variant, and the fact that Madeira’s Covid Multi-purpose unit is currently being underutilised, as only one patient is hospitalised, and there are no admissions to the Intensive Care Unit.
