According to the Madeira Employment Institute, there is a lack of manpower on the island, coupled with an unwillingness to work. Yet, despite the high levels of unemployment, many restaurants, hotels and civil construction companies are struggling to attract new employees.
During January and May this year, nearly 140 candidates didn’t show up for their interviews, and a further 20 rejected the offers made to them.
