Responding to pressure to further relax curfew hours and allow restaurants and bars to open for longer, the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, categorically stated that he does not expect to extend the opening hours of restaurants and bars anytime soon, although he did admit that the population had complied with the new curfew hours over the weekend.
The President further claimed that he had received data confirming that a vast number of the population had flocked to the north of the island, but praised restaurant and bar owners for keeping the situation under control and adhering to pandemic health and safety measures. He went on to say that we are not out of the woods yet, we are still in a pandemic and we have to ensure that with the increased number of people moving about that we maintain discipline to prevent further outbreaks. Concluding he said: “So for now, enjoy what you have!”
