At 08:34 this morning, the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters were called out to assist a 46-year-old woman who had been repeatedly stabbed in the chest and abdomen. The incident occurred near the Estrela Restaurant in Santo António.
Later on, a spokesperson for the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital confirmed that the woman was out of danger, but was to remain in hospital to undergo psychiatric evaluation, as the police and health authorities did not believe that she was attacked by an assailant, saying that no one came to her aid or witnessed the incident.

Earlier on this morning, a man had to be rescued having fallen from the third floor balcony of his flat, situated in Rua Lombo Centeio, Palheiro Ferreiro. Both the EMIR and the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters attended the scene, where the victim was quickly immobilised and rushed to hospital.
