‘Continue to Fight the Pandemic’

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said today that the fight against Covid-19 in Portugal “is going well,” but asked the population to “continue to help,” saying:

“What I ask of the Portuguese is not much. It is going well. Today’s numbers prove it. But for it to continue to improve, I need everyone to do their bit, that is all!”  He went on to say how impressed he was about Madeira, and the populations adherence to the pandemic health and safety measures.

He then highlighted the difference between Madeira and the mainland by confirming that the Public Security Police (PSP) had to disperse a crowd of about 500 people, most of whom were not wearing masks, this morning from the São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint in Lisbon.

The police were alerted to the gathering by a tip off, and are currently ascertaining if the crowd was a spontaneous gathering, or a social media organised event.
