The Regional Command of Madeira reported that yesterday the 23rd of March, at 12:37 pm, PSP officers prevented a young man from committing suicide in Campanário.

Officers were called to attend a scene on “Estrada da Adega, in Campanário, where a young man aged 21-years-old was shouting that he wanted to kill himself.  The man was suffering substantial bleeding from several head injuries, as moments before the police arrived he had thrown himself off a 2 metre wall, deliberating slamming his head on a glass and aluminum door.

According to the police statement, the individual who was very agitated, delusional and aggressive  continued to harm himself and refused to follow police orders.  Even with reinforcements, the PSP were unable to subdue him and therefore used a taser to bring the situation under control.

After being handcuffed, he was transported by the Ribeira Brava Volunteer Firefighters to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital where he was treated for his wounds and kept under observation.

It was thought that the man was probably under the influence of alcohol and/or narcotics,
