Depression Filomena is expected to affect the Madeiran archipelago from this afternoon until Friday. The Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), has stated that the effect of Depression Filomena, which is currently centered south of the Azores archipelago will bring, rain and strong winds to the island. Winds will increase in intensity from this afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 75 kilometers per hour in coastal areas, and increasing to 120 kilometers per hour in the mountainous, eastern and western regions of the island.
On Friday, snow is expected to fall on the islands peaks.
Following the meteorological situation, the IPMA issued an orange warning for the mountainous regions of Madeira between 18:00 today and 12:00 on Thursday due to the strong north / northeast winds.
The north coast of the island of Madeira and Porto Santo are also under orange warning as waves are expected to reach 5 to 6 metres, reaching a maximum height of 10 metres between 9:00 pm on Thursday and at 6:00 am on Friday.
The IPMA today placed the archipelago of Madeira under yellow warning due to the rain, which will be heavy at times and may be accompanied by thunderstorms. The warning is expected to stay in place until 06:00 on Friday.
