On Sunday, the 6th of December members from the Natural Park Wardens alongside the Maritime Police apprehended an individual who was spearfishing within the protected limits of the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve.
According to a statement made by a spokesperson for the Regional Secretary of the Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, the team’s surveillance and prompt action resulted in “the immediate apprehension of the equipment used, and the individual will now face criminal proceedings.
It should be noted that the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve, which is located to the east of Funchal, extends six miles from Ponta do Lazareto, to the west, and Ponta da Oliveira, to the east and starts approximately 600m from the shoreline.
Fishing of any type is prohibited within the reserve.
